March 20, 2018 – A team of Barnes & Thornburg healthcare attorneys helped SwedishAmerican Hospital obtain certificate of need (CON) approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board in February for a $126 million modernization and expansion of its hospital in Rockford, Illinois.

As part of the project, SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, will build a four-story tower that will provide services to women and children, including a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), only the second NICU in northern Illinois.

The board oversees the Illinois CON process that ensures the availability of quality health facilities, related services, and equipment to the public, as well as addresses community needs, accessibility and financing. The board voted 6-0, with one member abstaining.

“We are extremely pleased with the state review board’s decision, which allows this project advance and ultimately improves the surrounding communities’ access to essential health services,” said Daniel Lawler, lead counsel for SwedishAmerican Hospital, and a member of the firm’s Healthcare Department.

In addition to Lawler, the Barnes & Thornburg team representing SwedishAmerican included Claire Reed, Craig Burkhardt, Laura Seng, Anne Compton-Brown, Steve Morrill and Curt Fiedler.
