Janet Gertz Elected Co-Chair of the Lawyer Representatives for the Southern District of California

SAN DIEGO – Janet Gertz, a partner in Barnes & Thornburg’s Finance, Insolvency & Restructuring Department, has been elected co-chair of the Lawyer Representatives for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. Lawyer Representatives help facilitate communication between judges and attorneys and provide support and advice concerning the administration of justice in circuit courts across the country.

Currently serving a three-year term that began in 2017, Gertz, in this new leadership role, will become a member of the Ninth Circuit’s Lawyer Representative Coordinating Committee (LRCC), whose membership includes lawyer delegates from its 15 districts. Gertz will assist with the planning of the annual District Court conference, as well as the Ninth Circuit Judicial and Chief Judge conferences; plan and chair district meetings and LRCC meetings between lawyer representatives and judges; and prepare and submit the annual report to the Chief Judge, among other duties.

At Barnes & Thornburg, Gertz counsels clients in the areas of bankruptcy and insolvency, financial restructuring, and creditors' rights in large Chapter 11 reorganizations, along with related general business litigation and appeals, appearing regularly in bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy courts and courts of appeal. Additionally, she maintains a significant transactional practice, with a specialty in bond restructurings and work-outs. Her clients have included a variety of debtor, creditor, trustee and statutory committee constituencies, along with acquirers of distressed assets.

Gertz is a standing member of the Bankruptcy Rules Advisory Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. Additionally, she is a member of the Insolvency Law Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California and serves on its publications subcommittee. She also is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and California Bankruptcy Forum.

She earned her J.D., magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, from the University of San Diego School of Law, where she was senior executive editor of the San Diego Law Review. She earned a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from California State University, Northridge.
